Custom Fall porch installation featuring locally-sourced pumpkins and gourds, haybales and seasonal florals.
This Grafton Victorian home captivated me from the moment I first drove by. Painted a striking orange, the home features a wraparound porch and an ornately beautiful front door. It is a classic New England historical estate. I knew it needed quintessential New England Autumn decor.
I began by choosing a scale that would complement such a grand home. Entries this large demand an abundance of pumpkins expertly layered to draw the eye up the steps to the front door. By placing the bulk of the design at the base of the steps, I created a focal point to welcome trick-or-treaters and homeowners returning home after a busy day.
Pumpkins come in virtually limitless colors, textures and sizes. For this Grafton install, I began at Houlden Farm, where I hand selected every pumpkin and gourd. I look for “special” pumpkins with long twisting stems, unique textures, and bursts of color. For this Grafton install, I went bold, highlighting orange, green and red tones with the occasional pop of pastel contrast. I intermingled large and small to create depth; smooth and bumpy for textural interest.
On Halloween, I received a text from the homeowners telling me how excited trick-or-treaters were to see their pumpkin installation. I know I’ve succeeded when my designs evoke a feeling. Evoking wonder in the eyes of a child is as good as it gets.
